The Role

As a Senior Health & Safety Manager you`ll be the subject matter expert on health and safety covering behavioural, occupational, and process safety. You`ll develop and deliver safety strategy for the Burnley Distribution centre, on behalf of the Senior Leadership Team. The role will report into the Head of Operations. As our organisational subject matter expert you`ll provide advice and guidance to Senior Leaders to ensure legislative compliance and the promotion of continuous improvement to create and sustain the highest level of performance and Safety Culture.

Some of the things that you will do…

  • Responsible for the company’s behavioural, occupational and process safety strategy
  • Driving the implementation of the behavioural, occupational, and process safety strategy by equipping Senior Leaders and other relevant staff members to deliver the same
  • Accountable for the businesses response to any legal or enforcement action by the HSE or other relevant third parties (including but not limited to: the Environment Agency (EA) Local Authorities (LAs)) to ensure that the relevant issue is addressed sufficiently to eliminate the risk of financial penalty or prosecution.
  • Coaching Senior Leaders, and their management teams, to develop effective safety plans that will deliver the highest level of performance and identify and promote opportunities to share examples of best practice
  • Prioritising resources and associated support for the Operation, based upon an assessment of risk and opportunities derived from regular monthly analysis of safety performance
  • Delivering informed safety performance information to the Board, Executive Committee and management teams to guide management action, in turn providing assurance to teams including but not limited to Risk and Compliance
  • Leading advanced level accident and incident investigations and provide expert advice and guidance for other investigations to: provide guidance on establishing the root cause, developing actions/recommendations, and communicating learning points to the wider business as appropriate
  • Accountable for ensuring that the portfolio of safety training is suitable and sufficient to meet all relevant legal obligations.
  • Work in partnership with site functions, in particular Operations & Engineering to deliver site annual SHE targets.
  • Create and deliver a 3 year SHE improvement strategy

The Candidate:

You’ll possess the following qualifications, skills and experience:

  • Holds NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent professional qualification
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in a Health & Safety role within a fast paced B2C logistics operation or similar industry
  • Member of IOSH
  • Must be hands-on in terms of delivering the Health & Safety programme, influencing behavioural changes, delivering presentations, setting up workshops
  • Demonstrable experience in developing and delivering strategy
  • Wide ranging knowledge of current safety legislation and best practice
  • Demonstrable sound constructive decision-making abilities and interfacing with regulatory bodies and peer organisations
  • Passionate about safety, health, wellbeing and the environment with high levels of enthusiasm and drive to achieve results
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate with authority, articulately and empathetically at senior level and externally with key stakeholders such as the HSE
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in written form through email, technical documents and board level papers
  • Effective people management skills with the ability to develop a high performing team
  • Resilient with the confidence and courage to challenge behaviours and issues as appropriate.
