Role Purpose:

Primarily the purpose of this role is to oversee all aspects of the customs operational and compliance activities across our import and export countries.

Role description:

In the role of Customs Manager you will responsible for leading our newly established Customs function. Pre and post Brexit, you will advise the business of any updates to UK import and export regulations to ensure the business remains up to date with any changes that may occur. You will ideally have experience in working in a customs warehousing environment and knowledge of the relevant systems and processes.

As the Customs Manager you will ensure disruption to the flow of goods due to potential customs issues is kept to a minimum and speed to market is maximised whilst satisfying the requirements of the relevant customs authorities and operating within the boundaries of any customs authorisations held. You will need to have good knowledge of legislation and keep up to date with legislation and regulatory requirements.  Ideally you will have 3 years’ experience working in the area of customs and duty management.

You will develop, co-ordinate and oversee effective implementation and operation of international trade controls and processes (e.g. AEO accreditation). The ideal candidate will have experience in regulatory compliance in relation to business activities from non-EU countries. You will address trade compliance issues to mitigate import (as well as potential export) compliance risks and work closely with all stakeholders to ensure non-UK entities follow all the international and national regulations for the movement of goods.

 Key responsibilities:

  • Lead the Customs Team with full responsibility of all processes, systems, reporting and KPIs
  • Lead the Brexit strategy of behalf of the group including training and advising relevant business areas
  • Working with the Logistics teams to ensure that the boohoo group are compliant with regards to the customs warehousing solution.
  • Work with internal teams e.g. Finance and B&M to provide insight in to how the boohoo group ensure accurate classifications of products and adding value through duty engineering
  • Undertaking continuous analysis of the regulatory environment, in particular trade tariffs/duties and trade restrictions/requirements and ensuring accurate communication to the wider business
  • Liaise with all internal stakeholders such as Finance in terms of duty and Import VAT paid accuracy and reconciliation.
  • Work closely with the Intake team from origin to destination to ensure timely delivery of containers
  • Mapping boohoo group’s complex supply chain in a post Brexit scenario and identifying risks and opportunities
  • Operate and maintain a duty management system for the boohoo group
  • Ensure all documents and declarations (where required) are in place prior to arrival of the goods
  • Build and develop relationships with internal stakeholders and be the first point of escalation for issues arising
  • Be a brand ambassador and liaise with external stakeholders such as Freight Managers, Customs Brokers where applicable and suppliers when additional information is required
  • Manage the authorisations the boohoo group holds and ensure we operate within the conditions set e.g. AEO

Skills required: 

  • At least 3 years’ experience in a fast-paced customs environment
  • In depth knowledge and experience in Customs and Excise regulations
  • Experience managing Customs Compliance
  • Experience in managing customs warehousing polices and procedures
  • Extensive knowledge of import and export from non-EU countries, particularly the documentation and certificates needed for goods to enter the UK
  • Comfortable working with customs and import/export systems e.g. customs broker systems, critical path etc.
  • Strong leadership and organisational management skills and the ability to build and lead a newly formed team
  • Influencing and communication skills with the ability to liaise effectively with employees across all levels of the business
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills with attention to detail
  • Strong presentation skills, comfortable working with a variety of stakeholders at all levels
