Engineering Assistant Team Leader

Main Purpose:

To manage the engineering maintenance engineers and support the engineering team leader  in order to provide shift support in line with departmental business objectives, performing reactive, predictive, and planned maintenance on all sites engineering areas of responsibility, and automation equipment.


Core Activities:

Manage Engineering Shift and Provide:

  • Assist the team leader to ensure that the engineering shift team are adequately trained and certified in order that they can perform their daily tasks in accordance with Health & Safety requirements.
  • Working with the team leaders and operations, develop and implement an effective planned preventative maintenance programme in line with the manufacturer’s recommendations ensuring compliance with all current statutory legislation. This includes risk assessments and company requirements in relation to persons, plant equipment, property, environmental and Health and Safety.
  • To ensure all daily planned and routine work is completed and to ensure that all breakdowns are attended to and rectified in a line with departmental objectives in a safe manner, causing minimum downtime and preventing business disruption.
  • Mentor and manage the apprentices, ensuring they work safely, and assist them in achieving their required practical experience for their course work.
  • Manage project workloads as required.
  • Assist the team leader to ensure recommended and additional spares where required are in the stores, recording and managing spares usage in line with stores procedures and the purchasing system.
  • Assist the team leader to effectively lead, motivate, and discipline the team of maintenance engineers, and apprentices, against departmental responsibilities, objectives and KPI, s (Key performance indicators).
  • Maintain a hands-on approach when required, to assist the engineers on specific tasks or to cover staff shortages.
  • Promote continuous improvements and change through own initiatives.
  • Actively promote health and safety within the team ensuring standard activities have been assessed and have SOP, S written for them. (Standard operating procedures.)
  • Ensure an effective fault response service is available at all times in line with departmental objectives.
  • Ensure all activities in specialist areas on designated equipment are adequately supported by the sourcing and placing of suitable contracts in co-ordination with the maintenance team manager.
  • Assist with forecast and control of annual budget expenditure.
  • Maintain a sufficiently hands on role to ensure technical and practical help is provided when necessary.
  • Conduct presentations and briefings to the team in an effective and timely manner.
  • Ensure all reporting, recording and administration requirements are achieved.
  • Analyse performance in order to review team skills and therefore optimise performance levels.
  • Ensure all drawings and documentation on designated equipment are up to date.
  • Ensure all relevant H&S regulations and safe systems of work are adhered to.
  • Issue and manage permit to works in line with procedures when the Team leader is not present.
  • Set-up and run external contracts working with procurement and the Team Leader to support activities in specialist areas, liaising with such contractors when they attend site as necessary.
  • Pass on own experience by giving the necessary training to the engineers.
